[Three Hexes] The World Clock

Campaign: The White Elves have unleashed a Chaos Golem to destroy the World Clock! The Magi of Time have slowed it down with their most powerful magical artifacts, but those are being consumed in the action. The Magi are desperate to find more artifacts or a permanent solution towards to destroying the dragon-golem and defeating the elves.

Homebase (Hex 0) (0100): Watch Tower of Kynze - The dwarf town of Kynze houses a Watch Tower - a small outpost of the Magi that connects to the dungeons of the World Clock. It has also become the default headquarters for the forces aligned against the White Elves, leading to an explosion of commerce and opportunity for those willing to engage in it. The surrounding farming towns and lands are filling with the tents of armies and forces, as well as attracting raids from the elves intent on disrupting the allies.

Location 1 (0000): The World Clock - The world-shaping magics of the World Clock have transformed it's location into a maze of mysterious dungeons, tunnels and caverns, filled with creatures, artifacts and odd pockets of reality that provide weal and woe to those who enter the clock. The Magi allow any and all to enter the clock in order to learn from their experiences and to help guide the realities and power to a balanced effect that preserves the order of the world. Their need for Lawful artifacts to counter the White Elves has resulted in a huge increase of dungeon-delvers, many of whom have perished fighting among each other in the depths.

Location 2 (0002): The Twelve Knights - The reclusive Twelve Knights are training a natural Resonator, a very rare human mutant who can enhance the effects of magics cast around him. The Magi are wanting to put the boy next to the dragon as a way of destroying the golem, but their plans are frustrated by how unpredictable he becomes around any sort of magics - whether good or evil. The Knights believe that the boy must witness the suffering of the lands destroyed by the Elves, in order to shape him towards their cause, and are close to sending him on a dangerous trip near the dragon. 

Location 3 (0202): Dragon of Chaos - Desolation and destruction surrounds the golem and the White Elven army as they battle the attacking wedges of the Magi and humans who bear magical artifacts to wound the dragon. The weird tools, weapons and armors of the elves are highly sought after by rich nobles, but dangerous to obtain as each elven clan is protected by war wagons and strange creatures. Magi recruiters seek adventurers willing to make forays against the dragon or the elves to further slow down the creature.

"Three Hexes" are simple campaign starters to show that you don't need to do a lot to have interesting settings for people to play in. Feel free to use these in your game, campaign or as ways to spur on your own creativity and imagination!

I've purposefully left a lot of detail out because these are supposed to spur on your imagination! The scale is what I would use in my own world, but if something else suits you better, then go for it. I may have the features moved about on the hexes for clarity, if they don't suit you, move them!

Game Design Activity Sessions – Part 1: Remodelling A Space War On A Blank Paper Sheet

When I was a child, there was a game we used to play during the free time in between classes. It doesn't have an official name, but my friends and I always called it "Space War". Basically, the game's main idea is:

1) in a regular blank paper trace a dividing line right in the middle of it;

2) Each player (and it's a two player game) draws 3 to 6 spaceships (represented by triangles) randomly on their side;

3) the oldest player starts: they must draw a small circle on their side, this is called a "shot";

4) on the next step, this player must fold the paper sheet;

5) after folding the paper the player must guess the place their opponent drew the "shot" and draw another small circle pressing the pen firmly on the area;

6) finally, the player must unfold the paper to check if the "shot" hit the target (the spaceship/triangle); then, it's the other player's turn to play. Important rule: one "shot" only hits a spaceship if it is completely inside the triangle area.

After trying this game and understanding it, your mission in this exercise is: trying to modify the basic gaming mechanics by adding power cards and dice, giving the ships new abilities and trying to create more uncertainty in a match. Think big and modify the space game with creativity (and try to think of a less stupid name for it).

The Strategic Slump

Last night I began playing Fire Emblem Awakening again. It had been lost for two years after moving to Hawaii, but I recently found the small cache of games I'd brought with me to play on the trip stowed away in a small DS pouch sitting under my nose all this time. It was nearly a year ago I started playing Fire Emblem Fates that I wanted to go through Awakening again and do all the things I had neglected to do originally -- but I couldn't find it until now. Among the things I never did was play through on Classic-style (permanent deaths of units) and Lunatic difficulty. That's not even it's final form! There's a Lunatic + that unlocks if you clear it.

So I booted it up and found I had a Lunatic file on Chapter 15. I honestly don't even remember how many Chapters the game has because it's been so long since seen it, let alone played it. So I decided to start a new file. I spent a minimum of four hours trying to get through Chapter 1-4 last night. It was probably more than that including time spent reading some strategies and tips on how to play the random number generator just right. Then I discovered I don't have access to my old DLC content on this newer 3DS because I neglected to import the data from my old SD card and for some reason my Nintendo Network ID won't simply let me re-download it. That's bogus. This is bad news.

So like a fool, I decided that my current run wasn't good enough. That without the support of the DLC maps, I wouldn't be able to push much farther unless I made a few god-like characters over the first 5 chapters -- Fredrick and Robin, I'm looking at you. So I restarted with an updated player character [Robin] and went through that slog again this morning trying out some new strategies -- and generally it went a lot faster.

There is still this issue of getting to the last 2-3 enemies and watching as their 33% chance to hit and 6% chance of gaining a critical hit off of that 33% turn their expected 14 damage (to my 33 HP on Frederick) into 60 damage. Negating about 35 minutes of careful planning, because now I have to restart the entire map again. These situations are excruciatingly frustrating. I'm sitting here now because I'm asking myself -- am I having fun? I honestly can't tell.

The number of times you'll miss with 85% chance to hit and the enemy will land a hail Mary 4x damage critical combo on you with only a 5% chance are really the tip of the iceberg on how frustrating this experience has been thus far. I'm certainly irritated by the 10th reset due to crappy dice rolls that screw over a unit's survival or give my superstar characters a piss-poor level up gain. Then again when it all comes together, and Lady Luck smiles down on some clutch misses in my favor, it feels pretty damn good to push through the map and take down the boss. Is that moment of victory enough to keep me going? An hour or two of turmoil for an instant of triumph? I wish I knew.

What I do know is that I really want to play Fire Emblem Awakening one more time, and backing down from Lunatic at this time feels like giving up. Can I be the hero Ylisse needs right now if I back down from this challenge and take the easy road? I don't think my pride will allow it, but I'm not having much fun slogging my way through trial and error on these maps -- resetting every 15-25 minutes. How long will it even go on like this? Will I just give up and walk away from this great game, or can I suffer through this hardship and lead my troops to a new level of victory? I don't have any of the answers, friends.
